CHARACTER NAME: 82 White Chain Returns From Emptiness To Subdue Evil
CANON: Kill Six Billion Demons
HISTORY: The first commandment of YISUN is "Let there be no Genesis."
YISUN was the ultimate being, who never had and shall never have an equal. They had no beginning, or no end. They contained all knowledge, all power, and indeed the entire universe. They were also miserable, for they were alone. Imagine holding in your heart infinite stories and having no one to tell them to. So YISUN committed Deicide and split themself in two, becoming White Un, the male god of empty and still places and lord of all that Is Not, and Black Yis, mother of the rampant flame. The two of them fought for seven years, then made love for seven hours and gave birth to 777,777 gods in black and white, who together built Throne, the home of the gods, and there they lived for an unknowably long time. It got more complicated when the forge god Koss created the first of the four order of inheritors. The Servants, to maintain their works, and the Angels, to protect their works and maintain the law, were intentional. Mortals and Devils came later, by accident. Eventually, the gods grew bored of loving and fighting and living in general. So each god walked to the edge of Throne and faced outwards, and each god told a story, and each god's voice was like a fiery thread that extended out into the void, with a whole world forming at the end. Then the gods died, or passed on to some other existence that we cannot perceive. It's unclear. 777,777 gods, 777,777 universes, with Throne acting as a mausoleum for them all at the center of the great wheel that is the multiverse.
An age passed, with no one in Throne but dead gods and watchful angels. Then one day the firmament was breached by a mortal man. Zoss, the biggest badass in the history of time and space, used forbidden sciences and dark magic to find his way into Throne and found a crumbling city full of massive, bloated angels. The angels told him he could not be here and tried to make him leave, so Zoss fought them all and killed them all, and so inherited the Throne and became the Ruling King of all Creation. Angels cannot truly die, though. Eventually they started to reincarnate. Zoss and his followers made a new compact with the angels, allowing them back into Throne but on new terms.
It worked fine, for a while, until Zoss vanished and the thirst for conquest and power overtook his followers. They went mad, dragging most of the Great Wheel into war. In the end, only 7 remained, and they formed...not exactly a peace treaty, but an agreement to not actively murder each other, declaring themselves the 7-part gods of Throne. A prophecy was discovered by one of their number, however. It spoke of the successor, who would rise, flanked by a white flame and a black flame and followed by 108 stars, and they would inherit the power of the Conquering King and slay the seven headed beast. It's not hard to interpret the last part of that, so the seven would-be gods lived in fear of the day this would come, despite being currently the most powerful beings in the all of creation.
So how does 82 White Chain Returns From Emptiness To Subdue Evil fit into all this?
White Chain is a member of the Concordance of Harmonies, an increasingly weakening order of angels that still cleave to the compact made with Zoss all those millennia ago. She was on a routine job, dealing with a mobster's drug smuggling operation, when a human girl with no idea what was going on fell into the middle of things. White Chain quickly realized that this girl was more than she seemed. She may have been a mere human, but then Zoss had been a mere human as well. Which may have been why there was the key to all of Zoss's power jammed in her forehead.
White Chain immediately took steps to figure out how to get the key out before all of Throne heard about it, but was not fast enough. In short order, the poor girl (Allison Ruth was her name. She was a barista from Los Angeles) had half the multiverse after her head, which would be more than most people could handle, but she also had the power of a god jammed into her head, and she was slowly starting to learn to use it.
The story is still on going, but Allison's blundering has upset the delicate balance between the gods, and White Chain is following in her wake while attempting to keep her from getting killed by acting as her adviser, teacher, and body guard.
STRENGTHS: Trustworthy - Angels can lie, but it runs so counter to their nature that doing so actually can cause their armor to crack. When White Chain says that the forge god Koss beat the law into her with his silver chisel, that isn't a metaphor it is LITERALLY a thing that happened. If White Chain says she's going to do something, she is going to bloody well do it.
Likes humans - This is a relative thing. There are an increasing number of angels that think humans are a plague on creation that needs to be destroyed. White Chain isn't exactly FRIENDLY but she honestly believes that humans are worthy of protection and is willing to give them a chance to earn her respect. Compared to a lot of other angels, she is a goddamn bleeding heart.
Relentless - White Chain does not do things by halves. She doesn't give up a task half way through if it gets hard. When the going gets tough, the tough get going, and White Chain is as tough and determined as they come.
FLAWS: Stick up her ass - White Chain will always prefer doing things the right way and going through the proper channels. Breaking rules or customs in any situation drives her crazy. She's bad at jokes, she RARELY smiles, and whenever she DOES bend a little bit she will immediately deny it and go back to being even MORE of a hardass to make up for it.
Can't read the mood - As a being with no relation to humanity, White Chain doesn't have any instinctive understanding of human social cues. She had to learn how humans think, and her efforts focused more on catching people on lies than they did on reading people's moods. She will cluelessly interject herself into conversations that she clearly is not wanted or needed with barely any hesitation.
Emotional - White Chain insists she is a being of perfect law and order but she honestly isn't. None of the angels are any more perfect than humans are for all their pretentiousness. White Chain struggles constantly between her expectation of being a flawless arbiter of justice and her reality of having hopes and dreams that she refuses to acknowledge resulting in occasional violent emotional outbursts when she can't resist it anymore.
CANON ABILITIES: Spirit - Angels are spirit beings made of smokeless freezing flame. By default, they cannot interact with material objects by any means, but they can be contained in a vessel. Typically, a specially made suit of armor. White Chain's armor looks more or less human, but is made of "forged ash". It has several holes in it, through which you can see the divine flame that makes up her true self which burns brighter or dimmer depending on her mood. If you touched the flame (not recommended) your hand would be incinerated, but you'd also find the experience freezing cold rather than burning hot. She does not need to eat or breath (though she can if she wants to), weighs several hundred pounds, and is far faster and stronger and tougher than any normal human could ever hope to be. Her spirit form looks roughly human, but with wings sprouting from her forearms and back, and hair that looks more like a column of smoke studded with eyes (Pictured here, although this picture makes it look like she doesn't have hands which is not the case.)
Immortality, of a sort - Angels cannot be permanently killed by any means. That doesn't mean they're unstoppable, though. If you do enough damage to her armor (typically anything that would kill a human will suffice for "enough damage".), White Chain will not be able to control it anymore and be stuck as a spirit that cannot do anything to physical beings until it gets repaired, or at least gets the sword (or whatever) pulled out of it. If you were to follow her into the spirit realm and kill her again, she would turn to indestructible stone and stay like that for...a while. Canon doesn't make it clear how long. Eventually, the statue would reawaken as 83 White Chain Returns From Emptiness To Subdue Evil, who would have a subtly different personality and only scattered memories of her past lives. Thus, angels cannot be destroyed, but they can be "killed" in a manner of speaking.
Empty Palms - White Chain's fighting style of choice. By precisely controlling the flow of energy through her body and aligning her merdians, White Chain can effectively multiple the strength of her strikes ten fold. Among other things, this allows her to send people flying with a deceptively slow strike, or to attack distance via sending shock waves through the air. Humans CAN learn this style, but it is extraordinarily difficult.
The Law - This is not so much a power as just a part of the nature of any angel. Angels were created to uphold law and order. As such, they have difficulty lying. Each time 82 White Chain tells a deliberate falsehood, a new crack forms in her armor. It's loud and extremely obvious when it happens.
AU INFORMATION
AU CHARACTER NAME: 82 White Chain Returns From Emptiness To Subdue Evil
AGE: 18,000 years old, roughly.
POSITION: Advanced Martial Arts Instructor. Also teaches: Outlands cosmology/history and "Aspirations of Royalty" which is a class about increasing personal willpower and drive.
AU BACKSTORY: Many thousands of years ago in a corner of the Outlands unfathomably far from the mortal realm, a vastly powerful being named YISUN split themself into a multitude of lesser gods (they were very powerful and they called themselves gods, at least. One of their number, Koss, took a piece of YISUN's body (How does YISUN have a body if they split themselves to make the gods? A meaningless question, YISUN's nature is one of contradictions.), a brilliantly cold white flame, and made servants for the gods out of it, forming the first angels (There may be other beings in the Outlands that call themselves angels. I'm not claiming a monopoly on the concept.) 777 angels were made to protect the works of the gods and enforce their laws.
Eventually, however, the gods died. Or passed on to another form of reality that we cannot perceive or imagine. Or fell into an eternal sleep. It's not clear. What IS clear as that they're not around anymore, and the angels are. The Concordant Knights did their best to enforce the law as they understood it. Part of that involved keeping all humans out of the Outlands (that they could. There weren't nearly enough of them to keep us ALL out.), and this they did their level best to do until a mighty human candle named Zoss emerged from some ancient Sumerian kingdom and killed all the angels. When the angels eventually reincarnated, Zoss made a deal with them, wherein humans would help angels build bodies that could exist in the mortal realm in exchange for the angels allowing humans into the Outlands. On this compact, the Concordant Knights were formed.
The Concordant Knights are, however, shrinking. Many angels were still made at Zoss for the beating he gave them all those millennia ago, and even more are frustrated by the mess humans have been making of the Outlands. Some of them have deserted the order of knights to go their own way, selling their peerless martial skills as mercenaries. But a growing number of them have started their own order of Knights. The Thorn Knights call the Concordant Knights fools for propping up a corrupt and dying world. They seek to bring about Nightfall in hopes that they can wipe out humanity once and for all, and then decide if whoever ends up replacing them is worthy of being aided. At present, there are roughly 450 Concordant Knights to about 150 Thorn Knights (with a bunch of extra unaligned angels), but the balance is shifting in favor of Thorns.
White Chain hates this, though. She sees value in the world as it is, and detests the Thorn Knights for turning their back on their sacred duty. Which is why, in a hope to help stop the rising Thorn Knights, White Chain dared to make an alliance with Daybreak Academy. She is playing the long game, teaching the students there to respect the law of the Outlands in hopes of raising the future of humanity to respect the Concordant Knights. Many of her order believe she is wasting her time, but when she's decided on a course she is hard to deflect.
She has a long history with Daybreak Academy. The school's records speak of members doing battle with 78 White Chain in the 5th century. They also speak of 80 White Chain reluctantly agreeing to work with the school in the 13th century. And of 81 White Chain giving lectures in the 1840s. 82 White Chain, the current incarnation has been officially on the staff list since 1999.
AU PERSONALITY DEVIATION: There was no equivalent of the multiversal war in this AU. There was no single event that caused the angels to lose their faith in humanity. As such the Concordant Knights are a lot more unified, and White Chain is a lot less frustrated. The Thorn Knights didn't break off all at once but have been slowly growing over time. As a result of this, White Chain in this universe is a bit less disillusioned with humanity and more willing to work with us.
She's also not as important. In canon, the Angels are EXTREMELY powerful and have a HUGE amount of influence on the entire multiverse. Here, they're only one faction among many. This also forces White Chain to be more willing to compromise and cooperate with people she might canonically not.
RACE: Angel (Some others also call them Aeons)
SECRET SOCIETY: White Chain is a member in good standing of the Concordant Knights, an order of angels dedicated to protecting the balance and laws of the Outlands. Though small in number (about 450 of them remain across the infinity of creation), they have a long history and are generally respected by people who know of them as dangerous but fair enforcers. In some places, they bring the only semblance of law and order there is.
POWERS: Spirit - White Chain does not, physically speaking, exist. She is a being of cold white magical fire and in the mortal world she is utterly impotent and cannot even be seen. In the Outlands, her body can actually interact with things as per normal, though if she were to touch someone they would still get burned and frozen at the same time.
Runecraft armor - It is said that the angels were the ones who originally taught runecraft to early humans [citation needed]. This is because they need specially constructed suits of armor to interact with the material world. White Chain's armor is an absolute mastercraft by any runecrafter's standard. While empty, it becomes a rigid and lifeless statue of some kind of ceramic. While White Chain wears it, however, it moves as naturally and fluidly as if made of flesh and bone. While in her armor, White Chain is sturdy as hell and far faster or stronger than any normal human. Most ordinary weapons will bounce off of her unless wielded with extreme skill or force.
Immortality, of a sort - There were 777 angels made by Koss umpteen thousand years ago, and there are 777 of them now. If you stabbed a hole through White Chain's armor with a spear, her spirit form would be uninjured, but also banished back to the Outlands until someone pulled the spear out. If you were to follow her into the Outlands and kill her again, she wouldn't properly die, but would instead turn into an indestructible [citation needed] stone statue that would sleep for a while (let's say...20-30 years) before it would reawaken as 83 White Chain Returns From Emptiness To Subdue Evil, who would have a different personality and only scattered memories of her previous incarnations.
I'm not saying angels CAN'T be permanently killed, because I think if I did I'd get hit with the nerf bat, but I am saying that most people BELIEVE that angels cannot be permanently killed, and that no one has accomplished it to this day.
Empty Palms - Exactly as in canon: White Chain's fighting style of choice. By precisely controlling the flow of energy through her body and aligning her meridians, White Chain can effectively multiple the strength of her strikes ten fold.
HOUSING: No preference. She barely uses the room after all. She keeps it more or less presentable in case she needs to entertain guests but she doesn't need to eat or sleep or drink and she spends a lot of time in the Outlands so it's not unusual for her to just be gone for days at a time.
